Bu Sula’

Bu Sula' is a terrifying mythical creature characterized by extraordinary strength and supernatural speed. It is usually described as having feet and movement resembling those of a wolf, together with a long neck that makes its appearance even more frightening. Its body is black and its eyes red, reflecting what the tradition portrays as a demonic nature. The figure has existed in Emirati communal memory for generations and was used to frighten children and prevent them from wandering after sunset. Bu Sula' is a product of the interaction between the desert environment, human fear of the unknown and folk imagination associated with wildlife. It is distinguished by its ability to disappear and reappear suddenly and symbolically represents an unseen threat and frightening force hidden in darkness. Culturally, it forms part of Emirati folk heritage and its stories were transmitted orally across generations. The source also states that it is mentioned in old Arabic dictionaries. Its presence is associated with particular places such as ruins, tall trees, ravines and small mountains. It is not associated with specific physical tools but belongs to the spatial and social context of Emirati folk heritage.
