UNESCO Programme for Commemorating the Anniversaries of Emirati Figures and Institutions

Introduction

The UNESCO Anniversaries Programme is an initiative of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) dedicated to recognising influential historical figures and institutions whose exceptional contributions have shaped human knowledge, culture, and society. The programme commemorates milestones and anniversaries marking their birth or establishment.

The programme serves as a global platform that highlights the cultural, scientific, and humanitarian significance of these contributions and reinforces their continued presence in global memory.

The UAE takes immense pride in the inclusion of several of its distinguished figures and institutions in this programme, reflecting its leading role in fostering culture, knowledge, and creativity at both regional and international levels.

2025 - Poet Sultan bin Ali Al Owais

UNESCO designated 2025 as the year to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of the late Emirati poet Sultan bin Ali Al Owais (1925–2025), in recognition of his outstanding literary stature and enduring cultural and creative legacy. His work reflects the intellectual and social renaissance of the UAE and has strengthened his place as one of the most prominent poetic voices in the Arabian Gulf.

Beyond his literary achievements, Al Owais made significant contributions to philanthropy through investments in education, cultural institutions, and incentive awards. Among his most notable legacies is the Sultan bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Award in 1987. This prestigious award, presented every two years, honours leading Arab thinkers, writers, and scholars across disciplines, including poetry, narrative, theatre, criticism, humanitarian, and future studies.

2026 - United Arab Emirates University

UNESCO selected the United Arab Emirates University (UAEU), the country's first institution of higher education, to be celebrated in 2026 as part of this programme, coinciding with its Golden Jubilee anniversary. This recognition acknowledges the University’s pioneering role in advancing higher education and scientific research in the UAE.

Since its founding, UAEU has been instrumental in developing national talent and supporting sustainable development. It stands as a model of academic excellence and cultural diversity, bringing together students and faculty from around the world in an environment that promotes dialogue, coexistence, and cultural openness.

2026 - Poet Ahmed bin Sulayem AlFalasi

The late poet and writer Ahmed bin Sulayem AlFalasi was also selected under the UNESCO Anniversaries Programme, coinciding with his 50th death anniversary. He is widely regarded as one of the leading figures in both classical and Nabati poetry, as well as a prominent literary voice and historian in the UAE. This recognition reflects the significance of his intellectual and literary contributions, which helped shape the region’s cultural and poetic landscape during the first half of the 20th century.

His work represents the early literary voices that expressed Emirati identity through words, blending deep-rooted heritage with the complexities of a changing world. Drawing inspiration from the UAE’s cultural environment, particularly its Bedouin setting, his poetry and prose are noted for their authenticity, high poetic quality, depth of experience, and strong connection to societal values. His enduring legacy continues to be preserved in the Emirati and Arab libraries, reflecting his well-deserved global recognition.
