Al ‘Atam Tree

The Al Atam tree is a native Emirati tree of medium height, with small leaves resembling those of the samar (acacia) tree, strong hard branches of a dark brown colour, and dusty light-green foliage. It grows in open sandy plains, wide gravel areas and mountainous regions and is able to withstand harsh dry conditions and water scarcity. Historically, the tree became associated with Emirati folk heritage, where people used it as protection against evil, jinn and devils, employing its branches as strong whips or wooden boards for protecting the home. The history of the tree and its place in community culture illustrate its protective role in everyday life. Emirati families used it from ancient times, and knowledge associated with it was inherited across generations, particularly in areas inhabited by the Bani Ka'b tribe. Its physical characteristics—especially the hardness of its branches, their resistance to breaking or splitting, and their dark glossy colour—made it suitable for hand tools and forms of spiritual protection. The source does not mention fruit or nutritional properties, but emphasizes its strength and hardness. It also appears in folk tales as a symbol of protection and safeguarding. Al Atam represents an intersection between the natural environment and folk culture and illustrates how nature could be incorporated into popular belief and stories carrying educational and social protective functions.
