Sighting of the Ramadan Crescent

Sighting the Ramadan crescent is a deeply rooted religious and social tradition in the UAE and one of the most prominent expressions of welcoming the holy month. It reflects the community’s connection with Islamic values and its reliance on traditional astronomical knowledge. In the past, people would go after sunset to open or elevated places to observe the crescent with the naked eye, drawing on inherited knowledge of the lunar mansions and movement of the stars. Traditional astronomical expertise was fundamental to the success of the sighting. Sighting groups included men known for sharp vision and integrity in giving testimony, giving the practice an atmosphere of reliability and respect. It formed an authentic part of everyday life in the past and embodied the integration of religious values with astronomical knowledge inherited across generations. The tradition also reflects community spirit and social solidarity. The beginning of the month was announced by passing the news among people or through mosques, while older means of announcement included firing guns and orally transmitting the news between villages and neighbouring areas. Today, announcements are made through modern media, while the tradition itself continues as a symbol of authentic Emirati heritage. The scene is marked by joy and celebration: once the crescent is officially confirmed, happiness spreads among the people and congratulations and good wishes are exchanged in celebration of the arrival of the holy month of Ramadan, embodying the unity and cohesion of the community across time.
