Al Mishabb

Al Mishabb is a traditional fire-lighting tool. It is round and woven from date-palm fronds and is generally light yellow in colour. Its name derives from shabb al-nar, meaning to kindle a fire by moving air toward it to intensify the flame or embers. It was used to fan air toward embers in an incense burner, oven, hearth or kuwar, helping ignite the fire quickly and maintain its strength during cooking or heating. The Mishabb was also used to cool food immediately after serving by fanning air over it. Its design made it easy to hold and control. The name Mishabb was sometimes also given to a bundle of dry sticks or date-palm fronds placed over firewood or charcoal to help ignite a fire, reflecting its varied uses and close association with everyday traditional life in Emirati society.
