Al Midrab

The Midrab, also known as Misdam, is a traditional tool used in cooking and manual work in the UAE. It consists of a long, strong wooden stick with a broad end and is used primarily in preparing harees, where the mixture is repeatedly beaten until the meat or chicken and wheat grains become completely integrated and the desired smooth consistency is achieved. Harees is a well-known traditional dish served at occasions such as weddings, Eid and the holy month of Ramadan. The Midrab was also used in other everyday tasks, including the asida stirrer, used to stir asida (traditional stew) while cooking over the fire, and a rice beater used to separate grain from straw after harvesting. The tool reflects the diversity of traditional implements and their role in facilitating daily work in older Emirati society.
