يحضَّر مدلوك التمر بطريقة تقليدية من التمر بعد تنظيفه وفرزه من الشوائب، حيث يُختار التمر الناضج الجيد الذي لا يزال محتفظاً ببعض طراوته، وغالباً من أنواع معيّنة تُعرف بجودتها رغم تعرضها للشمس. ثم تُزال النوى من الحبات، ويُجمع التمر و يُطلب من الأطفال الصغار، بغسل أقدامهم جيداً ثم يطلب منهم أن يدوسوا التمر بأقدامهم حتى يتحول إلى كتلة لينة ومتجانسة.وأحياناً يُضاف إلى التمر أثناء التحضير بعض المنكهات مثل السنوت أو الشمر لإضفاء نكهة مميزة، ثم يُحكم إغلاقه ويحفظ في أوعية مخصصة لاستخدامه لاحقاً مثل البيب أو الخصف واليراب. ويُعدّ مدلوك التمر من الأطعمة التقليدية التي تعكس بساطة الحياة قديماً، والاعتماد على الطرق اليدوية في إعداد الغذاء وتخزينه.
