تُعدّ المهياوة من الأكلات الشعبية التراثية في الإمارات العربية المتحدة، وتتميّز بطعمها المالح ونكهتها الخاصة المرتبطة بالبيئة الساحلية. تُحضَّر من أسماك صغيرة مجففة ( العومة أوالبرية) يُغسل السمك جيدًا بالماء ثم يُجفف، وتُزال الرأس، وبعدها يُطحن السمك حتى يصبح مثل البودرة. بعد قلي أو تحمير الكزبرة وبعض البهارات (مثل الخرد والشمر) تطحن حتى تصبح ناعمة مثل البودرة. يُوضع قدر على النار ويُضاف إليه الماء والملح الخشن ويُترك حتى يسخن دون أن يصل إلى الغليان. تُضاف مكونات السمك المطحون والبهارات تدريجيًا إلى الماء والملح مع التحريك المستمر لمدة حوالي 5 دقائق. يُرفع القدر من على النار ويُترك الخليط حتى يبرد تمامًا. يُسكب الخليط في مرطبان زجاجي ويغطى بقطعة قماش حتى تمتص الرطوبة ثم يُغلق . يُترك لمدة 2 إلى 3 أسابيع، مع تحريكه كل 3 أيام بملعقة خشبية في مكان معرض لحرارة الشمس . ثم تُترك لتتخمّر فترة زمنية حتى تكتسب مذاقها المميّز. يُؤكل مع الخبز الأبيض التقليدي مثل الرقاق خاصة في وجبتي الإفطار أو العشاء.
