هو المغني الذي يرافق سفن الغوص في الإمارات قديماً. كان دوره أساسيًا لأنه يرفع معنويات البحارة ويخفف عنهم التعب خلال العمل الشاق في البحر. النهام يغني أشعارًا بحرية مثل "اليامال" و"الخطفة"، مستخدمًا صوته القوي ليقود البحارة في الأهازيج الجماعية. أحيانًا يغني منفردًا وأحيانًا يردّد البحارة وراءه في شكل كورال جماعي. الغناء لم يكن للترفيه فقط، بل وسيلة لتنظيم العمل، فالإيقاع يساعد على سحب الحبال أو رفع الأشرعة. كما أن كلمات الأناشيد تعكس مشاعر الغواصين من شوق لأهلهم أو دعاء بالرزق والسلامة. النهام يحفظ مئات الأبيات الشعرية الشعبية، ويؤديها بصوت مؤثر يجعل الرحلة أخفّ تعبًا. مكانته عالية على السفينة لأنه يملك القدرة على شدّ انتباه الجميع وإعطائهم طاقة إيجابية. النهام يمثل الجانب الفني والروحي من حياة الغوص، ويُظهر كيف أن البحر لم يكن مجرد عمل بل أيضًا ثقافة وإبداع ، بحكم الوراثة بالصوت الشجي أصبح العديد من أفراد النهامين و يؤدون الغناء في المحافل الفنية في الوراثة
