Modern Heritage Research Grants

This project focuses on identifying, documenting, and conserving a significant industrial heritage site in Dubai through an adaptive reuse approach. Amid rapid urban transformation, Dubai’s industrial landmarks are at risk, despite their vital role in the city’s modernization. This study selects one representative site within Al Quoz, Jebel Ali, or Deira—as a case study to develop a detailed conservation strategy that integrates heritage preservation with future urban needs.

The methodology includes in‑depth archival research, collecting historical maps, factory plans, and planning documents, combined with extensive on‑site documentation, including professional architectural photography and measured drawings. Oral histories from former workers, planners, and residents will capture intangible heritage. Comparative case studies of successful adaptive reuse projects will inform the strategy. The outcome will be a comprehensive conservation and adaptive reuse framework for the chosen site, presented in a printed and digital publication. This will offer actionable guidelines for heritage preservation, linking Dubai’s industrial past with its sustainable urban future.
