The Historic Wall of Umm Al Quwain

The Historic Wall of Umm Al Quwain dates back to 1820, during the reign of Sheikh Abdullah bin Rashid Al Mualla. It stretches from the Arabian Gulf in the north to the creek in the south, enclosing the emirate’s only land passage. The wall consists of three towers: Al Liwara Tower, Al Wastani Tower, and Mansour Tower. It measures 288.5 metres in length and features a teakwood gate that was opened in the morning and closed at sunset.

The wall stands 2.95 metres high and is equipped with vertical, horizontal, and square loopholes. It was constructed using marine stones bonded with gypsum. Following the directives of the late His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmed Al Mualla, the Department of Antiquities and Heritage undertook its restoration and maintenance, preserving it as a living testament to the civilisation of the ancestors and the last surviving example of the walled cities in the United Arab Emirates.
