Suwayda Khasaf

Suwayda Khasaf is an authentic mythical element of Emirati folk heritage closely connected with date-palm and date culture, which once formed the centre of everyday life and a principal food resource. The figure arose in a society that relied heavily on stored dates for food, and stories about Suwayda Khasaf were intended to protect this resource from tampering or theft. It was therefore portrayed as a frightening imaginary figure that appeared when people approached date stores. The name is associated descriptively with a black date kept inside a khasaf, a container made from palm fronds: suwayda refers to something black, while khasaf refers to the woven palm material in which dates were stored. Historically, Suwayda Khasaf belongs to the traditional period of Emirati life before modern transformations in food and food industries, when dates were a vital resource for every household and the community as a whole. The figure is both symbolic and social, representing not merely a mythical creature but community concern with protecting food supplies and monitoring shared resources. Tangible elements associated with it include date stores, woven khasaf containers, dates themselves and sometimes traditional storage implements. Its influence can also be seen in popular sayings and stories told to children to teach caution and discipline.
