Ramadan Cannon

The Ramadan Cannon is one of the well-established heritage traditions of the UAE and is associated with announcing the time of iftar during Ramadan. It became a social and cultural symbol reflecting solidarity and joy among members of the community. The UAE incorporated this tradition into its Ramadan practices, making it part of the daily scene that brings people together at a single moment and renews values of participation and shared identity. In the Emirati context, the Ramadan Cannon is associated with both tangible and intangible elements, most notably the traditional cannon itself and the locations where it is placed, such as forts and open squares, allowing its sound to carry across the widest possible area. Despite the development of modern media, the cannon remains present as a living symbol of the authenticity and continuity of Ramadan customs in the country. The tradition is believed to have originated in Egypt in the tenth century or during the Fatimid period and later spread to other parts of the world. In the UAE, the tradition began in Sharjah between the 1930s and 1950, followed by Dubai in 1960 and Abu Dhabi in 1970. The earliest locations were near forts.
