Arabic Coffee

Arabic coffee has been a fundamental element of Arab culture for centuries and represents a symbol of generosity and hospitality in Gulf communities, where it is associated with social customs, traditions and different celebrations. In Emirati society, Arabic coffee expresses generosity and forms an important part of folk heritage. It also symbolizes unity and cohesion among members of the community and strengthens social and cultural ties, which is why it is continuously present at private and public occasions. It is distinguished by its pleasant aroma and characteristic flavour enjoyed by different segments of society. Preparing Arabic coffee involves several precise stages beginning with selecting, sorting and washing the coffee beans and then drying them. The beans are roasted until their colour changes to brown or reddish, then ground, infused and brewed over low heat to develop a strong aroma and distinctive flavour. The tools used to prepare coffee developed over time: in the past, simple means were used in desert communities, while later traditional utensils appeared in homes and majlises, improving preparation and serving. A designated place is reserved for coffee in the majlis, and its serving is accompanied by specific rituals reflecting respect for the guest and good hospitality. Arabic coffee remains an important symbol in everyday and social life, expressing Arab identity and values of generosity and communication and retaining its place as an authentic inherited custom across generations.
