Al Sa’luwah

Al Sa'luwah resembles a female gorilla but is even more terrifying. Despite her hideous appearance, she was said to lure men into marrying her, while her loyalty to her own people never changed even after living with humans for a long period. The name Al Sa'luwah is still heard from time to time in the speech of older people. Al Sa'luwah is described as a creature closely resembling a woman in bodily details: height, waist, smooth limbs and long hair. A person seeing her from behind might believe she was a real woman, as she sways and moves gracefully like a human female. Yet she is not human and is closer in nature to an animal. Narrators in the UAE almost unanimously say that Al Sa'luwah disappeared from the country and never returned. They attributed her disappearance to the arrival of electricity, which they also believed caused many devils and other possessed creatures to vanish. Al Sa'luwah was said to take pleasure in killing men but not women, principally because she was female and hated men, finding satisfaction in killing them. One narrator recounts that a poet used to walk long distances from one town to another, with some journeys taking a full day. One day shortly before sunset, while travelling from Umm Al Quwain to Sharjah, he passed a woman seated on a large rock by the seashore, combing her long hair. She made a faint sound as though calling him, but he was afraid to approach. Instead, he improvised a beautiful poem praising her figure and the length, softness and deep black colour of her hair. She gestured for him to leave. When he later told people what he had seen, they said she had been Al Sa'luwah and that his escape from her grasp was almost miraculous. Another narrator says that Al Sa'luwah has a strange and frightening appearance, with a body covered in hair like a monkey, yet she can transform herself into a beautiful, attractive, tall and elegantly dressed woman who entices men before attacking and killing them. Some people link the figure of Umm Al Duwais with Al Sa'luwah, claiming that Umm Al Duwais is herself a Sa'luwah who transforms into a beautiful, sweetly scented woman. If she kills her victim while in the form of Umm Al Duwais, she uses the sickles she carries; if she kills him in another, more brutal and mutilating manner, she is believed to have killed him in her true form as Al Sa'luwah. Among Emirati sayings used to insult someone regarded as ugly and ill-omened is: “May God confound your face, you face of Al Sa'luwah,” an expression of extreme condemnation.
