Al Raha – Hand Mill

Al Raha is a traditional stone grinding tool formerly used to grind grains and various materials by hand. It was made from hard stone such as flint or basalt because of their strength and ability to withstand repeated use. It consists of two circular stone discs of similar size, each approximately 10 cm thick and roughly an arm’s length in diameter. A hole is made in the centre of the disc into which a metal peg or piece of strong wood is fixed to facilitate turning the upper stone over the lower one during grinding. Al Raha was used to grind different grains such as wheat, barley and rice and was sometimes also used to grind henna and other materials. It formed an important part of everyday household equipment and reflected the community’s reliance on simple manual means to prepare food and meet basic family needs.
