Al ‘Abd Al Muzanjal
Al Abd Al Muzanjal is described as a tall, savage man with a human form who is nevertheless regarded as one of the most powerful jinn or as a person possessed by rebellious jinn. He is bound in chains and drags behind him a heavy iron weight known in Emirati vernacular as qalulah.
What is unusual about Al Abd Al Muzanjal is that he can appear at any time: night or day, in light or darkness. Stories about him have circulated in different parts of the UAE, and there is broad agreement that he appears in inhabited places such as residential neighbourhoods in towns and villages.
Hardly any place in the UAE is without a story or memory of Al Abd Al Muzanjal. Many people have a frightening tale involving Bu Al Salasil, “the Man of Chains,” his best-known nickname.
One woman says: “I was in our house, built from date-palm ribs, inside a small Arish in the courtyard at midday, trying to put one of my children to sleep when he refused. I decided to frighten him with Bu Al Salasil and said, ‘Go to sleep before Bu Al Salasil comes and eats you.’ As soon as I finished the sentence, I heard something like a roar and the rattling of chains behind the wall of the house, which was also built from palm ribs. My heart nearly leapt from my body from fear. I began pleading with God to protect me from this hateful visitor, recited whatever Qur’anic verses and prayers I could remember, repeatedly sought refuge in God from devils and kept saying, ‘In the name of God, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful,’ until he disappeared. I swore never to mention Al Abd Al Muzanjal again.”
